I shot hundreds, maybe thousands, of these unsettling images across a few years, using an iPhone and an app called Hipstamatic. You could select different lenses, film—all digital filters—and randomized the combinations by shaking the phone. So I would click, shake, click, shake and few times, and then pick which ever I liked the best. I confided what I shot to representations of human being but not live people. Anythings from mannequins to a food menu was fair game. I had a show for them—I had about 150 or so printed up.
